01 / Describe the moments you want to improve
Walk through an ordinary day. What do you do when you leave? Which lights do you adjust every evening? Where do remotes, weak connections, or awkward shades add unnecessary steps? Write down three to five moments that deserve attention.
Be specific. “Make the home smarter” leaves a lot open. “Turn off the main-floor lights from the bedroom” or “Give a visiting relative access without sharing our everyday code” provides a useful design requirement. Include the people who will use the system, not just the person selecting it.
02 / Inventory the home and its equipment
Collect a floor plan if one is available, photographs of the rooms involved, and model information for equipment you want to retain. Existing televisions, speakers, thermostats, locks, and network devices may or may not support the integrations you have in mind.
Record known constraints too: difficult cable routes, finished stone or timber, limited equipment storage, and areas with poor connectivity. A clear inventory makes the conversation more productive and helps avoid assumptions about compatibility.
03 / Put infrastructure on the agenda early
For a new build or substantial renovation, discuss network wiring, access-point locations, shade power, and equipment space before finishes close off options. Ask which decisions need to be made at the current stage and which can wait.
In an existing home, the starting point is accessible routes and the scope of work you are comfortable with. A wireless product may be useful in one situation, while a wired connection is the better fit in another. The choice should follow the actual conditions.
04 / Decide how you want to control things
An app is only one option. Wall switches, keypads, remotes, schedules, and coordinated scenes can each serve a purpose. Think about what will feel obvious to household members and visitors.
Discuss how essential tasks work if a phone is unavailable, how remote access is managed, and which functions depend on the internet. This is also a good time to ask about account ownership, subscriptions, and what information you will receive at handover.
05 / Choose a first phase with a clear outcome
If the full vision is larger than the initial project, define a phase that works well on its own. That might be a network foundation, a main living area, or lighting and access for a second home. Identify any preparatory work that makes later additions easier.
A phased project should explain what is included now, what remains for later, and which future choices are still flexible. Avoid treating the first stage as an arbitrary collection of products with no shared plan.
06 / Prepare for installation and handover
Discuss access to the home, any related trade work, scheduling around construction, and the decisions that need approval before equipment is ordered. Confirm what the proposed scope includes and ask about any exclusions.
Before the project is complete, walk through the controls you will actually use: arriving, leaving, changing scenes, adjusting entertainment, and managing access where included. Ask how to make routine changes and how to contact the appropriate support channel for the installed products.
